  1. Strict in Hawaii?

    Aloha all. It's me again!

so, a lot of you are from hawaii, live in hawaii, or been to hawaii, right? Well, I'm going to Hawaii next year. I'll only be 20 though, not 21. My understanding is that the legal age to drink is 21, or go into a club etc.

Fake ID's over here, aren't all that bad. If you get caught, they generally just take it away from you at the door, and you move on. What's it like in Hawaii? I don't have a fake id or anything, but is it strict on that over there? because in australia, in some areas, they don't even ask for id, because it's pretty laid back....

what's it like? if you get caught? will they follow up on you and fine you? jail time? or just laid back?

I realize you've been here alot longer then I have and I don't say this to be rude or mean. Is a Ukulele forum really the place to ask this kind of question? You're asking advice on an illegal activity- drinking underage.

I wouldn't recommend it. I used to do security at a resort and I was a bouncer at the club we had. We didn;t play around with underage drinking. The penalties aren't worth the risk.

  4. Oh yeah. Hahahaha. Maybe I don't see it as bad, considering I'm already a legal age drinker in my own country. Hmmm... It should be the legal age of te country on your passport!!!! Sucks.... Trip ruined !

Yeah I know this is an ukulele board, but this is the general board, most, if not all, threads don't mention a lot of ukulele, if it does, it's only because everybody here has that in common.

Suppose the term "underage drinking" does make me think twice!

Don't even bother. They are strict. Reason being is that an establishment can lose their liquor license if they knowingly allow an underaged person to drink. At the very least, they will get hit with a fine. In many cases, the person who does the serving can also get hit with a fine. Does it happen? Sure it does. Minors get served. But if minors get caught, they get arrested or ticketed (depending on the state) for underaged drinking. But if you go to a bar, they won't even let you in the door as they will card everyone under the age of 40 at the door.

I wasn't trying to be rude- I just thought of a very young guy wanting to go clubbing... so you can understand why I came across as harsh.

I'm curious what the legal age is there is? I guess I can google it.

21 is the legal age in US. Even if I could give you the answer you wanted Matt, i wouldn't be encouraging you to break the law mate.

I don´t know how it works in Hawaii, but in Jersey, not only is the larger establishment liable, but also the particular person who serves the alcohol. Waiters here can lose their jobs if they serve alcohol to a minor. I imagine if you somehow got past the bouncer and then were discovered as a minor, the bouncer would probably be out a job. And as Henry said, it´s easy for establishments to lose their liquor licenses over something like that, and getting it back costs anywhere from several hundred thousand dollars to a million or more. In addition, if someone gets drunk at Bar A, then goes to Bar B, then gets into an accident because he´s drunk, Bar A is liable and can be sued because they served the guy alcohol...even though he drank more somewhere else.

American drinking laws really are strict. Surely you can find other things to do?

Matt, here is a good rule for life...DO NOT DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY. Not only is it silly, it is rude to flout the law's of a country that has you as a GUEST....sorry to be a downer mate, but I reckon you can absorb enough culture of your host country without breaking their laws.

Also if you get convicted of a crime in the US, you will never get a visa again to visit, for the rest of your life, I know someone who worked for the US here processing visas, they are very strict about it!!!!
